PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Large African Butter Jade Sculpture of a Distinguished African Lady Carrying a Water Jar. Beautiful Banded Green and Black Butter Jade and a forever Classic Carving.

African Butter Jade is the first stone that we mined back in 1990, from near Bronkhorstspruit, Pretoria, South Africa and is known for its creamy yellow to light green hues, often with subtle marbling or mottled patterns that resemble soft butter, hence its name. Despite its name, Butter Jade is not a true Jade but rather a type of green banded Serpentine-Dolomite, highly prized by carvers and loved for its ability to get a decent polish (a problem with many soft stones for carving) and has a nice smooth texture and waxy luster.

These Carvings that we unpacked recently have been packed away in a gallery storage in a box since the 1990s and it was a pleasure to handle this beautiful polished art-piece made from a piece of rock that I personally mined and handled over 30 years ago!
